The Sue Atkins Weekly Parent Coaching Question

December 6, 2010

I am writing some new Parenting Made Easy CDs and Workbooks at the moment and one of the Coaching Questions that I always ask when I’m working 1-2-1 with parents at my Surrey farmhouse is:

Are your rules realistic and appropriate for the age of your child?

So many parents I coach have idealistic rules and expectations for their children which aren’t really age appropriate for their child: i.e.  taking a small child to a fancy restaurant where they have to sit still for ages is setting them up to fail and be naughty!

While some  parents are still speaking to their 14 year old as 4 year old –  e.g. Is it really necessary for your teenager to ask to leave the table until everyone’s finished (A lot of the parents I work with often forget to adapt the rules as their children grow up!)

So for this week ponder your rules and see if they are age appropriate.
